Historical background

Grand Stable
The name does not owe anything to its size -which is identical to that of the Small Stable- but rather to the fact it were placed under the authority of the Grand Equerry who had the responsibility for the horses, all perfectly raised to the art of hunting and that of war. These horses were strictly reserved for the kings and princes. Today, one of the galleries shelters the "Musée des Carrosses" (museum of Coaches).

Little Stable
This Little Stable was directed by the First Equerry. It sheltered coaches, carriages and carriage horses, but also ordinary mounts at the Court’s disposal. The Grand stable, together with the Little Stable symmetrically situated to the South, contributes to the grandiose aura of the "Place d’Armes" ushering in the Château of Versailles. It also forms the base of the trident of the three avenues (Saint-Cloud, Paris and Sceaux), covering a vast trapezoid patch of land between these first two avenues with a majestic courtyard between its main façade and the Château.
